5 Tips to Survive Nursing School

5 Tips to Survive Nursing School

We all need the help we can get from our mentors. These are the tips that I always instill in my students when they ask how to make nursing easier. These 5 tips to survive nursing school is key to pass nursing school!

1. Know your Subjects

Nursing is made easier these days due to the technological advances we now have. If you have books, you gotta read! Make it a habit to do an advanced reading on your subjects. It could be 30 minutes per day and if you’re feeling it, make it an hour! For those who don’t have books, there are pdfs and nursing websites you can access for free.

2. Prepare your Things

This includes the things you need for nursing school such as notebooks, pens, highlighters ( a lot of them, the more colors you have, the better), nursing resources, and of course, prepare yourself too! Nothing better than studying with all the materials you need just around the corner.

3. Manage your Time

Nursing school does not necessarily mean that you no longer have time for friends and yourself. One thing I learned in school is that having time for other stuff besides school and endless studying is just as important. What you need is to make a list of things you need to accomplish at a certain date and time. Use a journal or a virtual calendar! Set time for the things you enjoy and study.

4. Know it’s OKAY TO FEEL DEFEATED at time

School can take so much from you at times, it becomes too overwhelming due to the amount of work such as the assignments, case studies, clinical duties, and that could really take a toll on your physical and mental health. But know that it’s totally okay and that’s normal. You are a person and things don’t always go the way you planned. You deserve to forgive yourself for not always winning.

5. Work, Rest, Repeat

Once you did your part, the studying and all that, you rest! Do not feel guilty about that extra time you slept in on a Saturday, the fiction book you decided to reread for the nth time, or that time you spent at the beach with your friends. Once you’re recharged, we work again for that RN!
