Distant vision tested with the Snellen chart: 20/20, 20/80, 20/200
20/200 means: at 20 feet, the patient can see what a patient with normal vision can see
at 200 feet
CN III: Oculomotor 👀
Eye movements, pupillary constriction, accommodation
Eye movements: most eye movements are controlled by CN III
Pupillary constriction: direct and consensual
Accommodation: near focusing of the eye
IV: Trochlear 🙄
Responsible for movement of the superior oblique muscle
CN V: Trigeminal 😑😀
Supplies sensation to the face, the nasal and buccal mucosa, and the teeth
Motor division responsible for mastication
VI: Abducens 👀↔️
Responsible for movement of the lateral rectus muscle
VII: Facial 😝
Innervates the facial muscles and supplies taste to the anterior 2/3 of tongue
VIII: Vestibulocochlear 🦻
Responsible for hearing, balance, and awareness of position
IX: Glossopharyngeal 👅🤮
Supplies sensation to the pharynx, posterior 1/3 of the tongue, and tympanic membrane
X: Vagus 😀
Supplies parasympathetic fibers to the viscera of the chest, abdomen; motor fibers to the
pharynx, larynx; sensory fibers to the ear, meninges, viscera
Able to talk and swallow
XI: Spinal Accessory 🤷🏻♀️
Motor nerve supplying the sternocleidomastoid and trapezius muscles
XII: Hypoglossal 👅
Supplies motor fibers to the muscles of the tongue
Observe for fasciculations when patient sticks tongue out .
